During the Silla Period, there was a weapon called Cheonbono, which flew a thousand steps (1,386m) of arrows developed by Gujincheon. It flew an arrow with the power of the machine. It is said to have been devasting and could pierce the armor worn by the enemy. The Tang Dynasty viewed it as a representative weapon of Silla.
Therefore, there is a record that the Tang Dynasty dragged Gu Jin-cheon, the artisan of making Cheonbono. Silla was secretly preparing for the Nadang War(Silla against Tang) after the fall of Goguryeo, so it followed the Tang Dynasty in an effort to reassure itself. However, Gu Jin-cheon made excuses that the ingredients were not good for China on purpose, and that the materials brought on the ship from Silla could not be used because of the moisture, and eventually did not make a proper Cheonbono despite the threat of Tang Go-jong(Kig of the Tang dynasty). It is said that the first Cheonbono was about 30 steps away, and the wood from Silla was about 60 steps away.
With 30,000 soldiers, Silla was able to destroy Tang's 200,000 troops and protect Korea from China.
Thanks to Gujincheon's sacrifice, Silla could not be integrated into China and preserved the country for a thousand years.
